why should exams be compulsory? i think i would work much harder if i didn’t have to cram for some arbitrary test… you know, you mull over the difficult passages in “ulysses” for hours just because you feel like it, but when they assign you joyce for homework, you cannot make yourself read a single sentence without squinting in pain… the coerciveness of compulsory assignments takes the fun out of learning, it only creates robotic regurgitators of watered down little packets of information… as a result, we have hordes of “just add water and stir” kind of people, who don’t know any better.
